A new method of biological samples transportation


According to the National University of Science and Technology ‘MISiS’ (http://misis.ru/) press-release published on May 18, 2017, researchers from the University together with their colleagues from Lomonosov Moscow State University suggested a new method of biological sample transportation. This method will allow transporting samples over any distance. The scientists suppose that this approach will replace the traditional methods and be widely used in detection of dangerous infectious diseases.

Nowadays, special syringe-test tubes are used to obtain biological samples. They are transported to laboratories in special containers under low temperature conditions. However, the disturbance in temperature or poor storage conditions can lead to mistakes in results. Besides, this method is quite expensive.

The method suggested by the scientists is similar to another already existing method, namely a dry assay. It is used now in newborn screening. However, this method requires expensive equipment for obtaining and analyzing the samples, and also special cellulose cards for collection, which are not produced in some countries. Besides, according to the leading researcher Dr. Alexander Osipov (MISiS), a complicated structure of cellulose causes an uneven spread of the blood sample, and that can affect the result of the analysis. In order to avoid it, the scientists suggested using a special porous inorganic material that contains metal nanoparticles. Its structure and shape were selected in such way, that blood spreads uniformly over the whole volume, and when the blood components are washed away, they almost completely go into the solution.

According to the authors of the investigation, the new samples dry approximately two times faster, and this hastens the process of sample preparation. Then the card could be just put into an envelope and sent by post. This will also allow reducing the transportation costs.

The rector of MISiS University Alevtina Chernikova added that the University negotiates with leading Russian research laboratories and several large companies of south-eastern Asia, which took an interest in applying the new method in medical and veterinary diagnostics.
