A robot that will repair the road

:::

Researchers from Tomsk Polytechnic University are developing a robot that would be able to perform pothole repairing. This statement was made on Tomsk Polytechnic University website on May 15, 2017. The project team that includes students from Tomsk Polytechnic University and Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics is working now on the creation of prototypes. One of the prototypes will be used for the adjustment of the computer vision system, and the second one will be used for the adjustment of motion mechanics.

It is planned that the created robot would be able to orient itself with the use of computer vision system that will help it to detect the main elements of a road, such as road marking, traffic lights, and some of road signs. The developed prototype will detect a pothole by its colour. According to the researchers, the robot will fill the potholes with a special substance, an emulsion, using the stream injection technology.

'Coming closer to the pothole, the robot will scan it, make a map of its depth, and after that open an emulsion supply. This robot will allow automatizing the process of pothole repairing. We assume that the robot would request the permission for pothole repairing from an operator. That will mean the completely different conditions of work for the operator - it would not be necessary for him to be on place, and he would also be able to run several robots simultaneously,' the head of the project Vsevolod Rachis (Tomsk Polytechnic University) said.

According to the head of the project, the motion system of the prototypes is ready, and the prototypes are already able to get the information from sensors. Vsevolod Rachis himself is working on base recognition elements of the prototypes.
