Researchers from the National University of Science and Technology ‘MISiS’ together with their colleagues from Vyatka State University developed a unique mouthwash that destroys up to 83% of dental deposit bacteria and reduces gingivitis. This statement was made on MISiS website on June 2, 2017.
Nowadays, one of the priority directions of investigations in dentistry is the prevention of caries with the use of sodium fluoride-free mouthwashes, because the excess of sodium fluoride is harmful for humans. The tooth-brush is not effective enough, and only a few of patients use the dental floss. Mouthwashes become more and more popular, because they penetrate into the interdental space.
Russian scientists suggested a new type of mouthwash based on metal nanoparticles. Clinical tests of the new solution were carried out on volunteers together with Faculty of Dentistry (Kirov State Medical University). Hygiene and paradontal indexes were measured before the beginning of the mouthwash use and 14 and 30 days after it. According to the results of the experiment, the innovation solution of oxide metal reduces the bacteria growth up to 83% and thus lowers the chance of caries development and parodentium diseases. The anti-inflammatory action of the solution was also microbiologically proved.
According to one of the authors of the investigation the head of the Faculty of Dentistry Dr. Svetlana Gromova (Kirov State Medical University), a disease-producing germ cell is destroyed because of the interaction with the dispersion system, namely 'magnetite in water solution of cetylpyridinii chloridum'. Svetlana Gromova explained that the new solution is sometimes more effective than antibiotics against Staphylococcus aureus and most of cocci. At the same time, according to the researchers, colloidal solutions of metal oxids are not toxic for humans.
The MISiS researchers are now creating first test batches of the preparation, and also registering the solution and official patenting it as a mouthwash.
