Listed below is a select list of some of the major research institutes in Taiwan.

Academica Sinica

Founded in 1928, the Academica Sinica is the most promiment research institute in Taiwan. There are a total of 25 research institutes, ranging from history to nano-technology, led by some of the leading scholars in the world.


The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)

ITRI is a non-profit R&D organization engaging in applied research and technical service. It was founded in 1973 by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) to attend to the technological needs of Taiwan's industrial development, and has now grown to a 6000 people operation. It serves as the technical center for industry and an unofficial arm of the government's industrial policies in Taiwan. Backed by its broad research scope and close industrial ties, ITRI is becoming an increasingly active member in the global industrial R&D community.


National Applied Research Laboratories (NARL) 


Established in 2003, the NARL is a non-profit organization comprised of eight laboratires. Its primary interests are focusing on cutting-edge research in basic and applied sciences, as well as promoting the integration of existing laboratory resources in support of basic academic research.


Science & Technology Research and Information Center, NARL 

Founded in 1974, Science & Technology Policy Research and Information Center (STPI) is commissioned to promote the science & technology research and development by facilitating the dissemination of sci-tech information across Taiwan as well as other parts of the world.


Instrument Technology Research Center

ITRC is a governmental research center. The aim of this Center is to establish and develop specific technology and manufacturing capabilities for precision instrument in Taiwan.


National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center  


Since 1993, the NSRRC's mission has been to operate a cutting-edge synchrotron radiation facility for pioneering scientific research. Scientists from all over Taiwan and the world are conducting advanced scientific research, with 680 experiment-runs and 4300 user-runs in 2005.


National Center for High-Performance Computing  


Founded in 1991, Taiwan's National Center for High-Performance Computing (NCHC) is the nation's leading source for high-performance computing (HPC) hardware, software, and networking resources. They are committed to developing innovative and life-enhancing applications that best utilize these resources.


National Space Organization    


Established in 1991, the NSPO is responsible for the promotion and execution of Taiwan’s satellite program and space research.

National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering  


Located on one of the most active seismic regions in the world, Taiwan suffers from frequent earthquakes caused by the Circum Pacific Seismic Belt. With the joint effort from the Taiwan National Science Council (NSC) and the National Taiwan University (NTU), the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) was established in 1990. Since then, this institution has worked endlessly to upgrade seismic resistant design standards for all constructions and provides feedback to the engineering community through research and development.


National Nano Device Laboratories 


Since it was funded in 1988, National Nano Device Laboratories (NDL) has been playing a significant role in support of universities in Taiwan for research and development in advance semiconductor process technologies, and educating and training high-tech people for the microelectronics industries.
